I’m new to this forum. I knew open carry was legal in PA since I majored in criminal justice in 1990. I got a LTCF when I turned 21 and carried ever since. I never carried open before and would like to start, mostly in the summer because I would think it would be more comfortable. Since 1990 I knew most LEO just did not know the law on open carry. I live in the York area and I had a friend who walked into the west Manchester mall in 92 open carrying. The police were called and were informed; A MAN WITH A GUN was in the mall. The police responded with guns drawn and asked for a permit. The man stated he did not need a permit and the police stated, oh yes you do and arrested him and took him to the magistrate. The magistrate released him stating it was legal to open carry without a permit. I never wanted that Hassel. Of course I never had that problem with a CCW because obliviously no one knows you have a gun. I’m happy to see some of you are exersing your right to carry open. I would like to but at this time I’m just too nervous to do so.
I called my local police department today to see how well informed they are to the open carry law but I didn’t hear back yet. I called the local PSP barracks and talked to a trooper. The trooper was aware that it is legal to open carry but stated, if you are walking down town and people panic because you are wearing a gun then you are causing a disturbance and you could be charged as such. I know that wasn’t true but I did not call up to argue. He asked me what township I live in and I informed him I live in Manchester. He informed me to call the local police and stated, they may have township ordinances against open carry. I know a township cannot regulate that law but I didn’t want to get into a peeing contest with him. It upsets me that open carry is legal just as driving a car but because most of the public doesn’t know that law, the LEO wants to make you the criminal because some people panic when they see someone with open carry. The trooper also stated if it’s night time and you are walking up to a turkey hill wearing a gun, most people are going to assume you going to rob the store. How many criminals are going to walk around with a holster on their hip??????????? Most all criminals walk into a place carrying the weapon concealed and pull it when they are ready to commit the criminal act. I read that several of you carried several years without a problem, but my luck I would get questioned the first day open carrying. I brought the subject up at my local gun range who CCW and most of them seem against open carry stating, You will just make all gun owners look bad by open carry because most people will observe it as “looking for trouble” I disagree.

The new law appears to imply that firearms shall be allowed federal parks in compliance with the state law in which each individual park resides. Additional verbage (i don't have it at this time) mentions concealed carry in particular. Anyone have guidance on this one...?

Also, I believe carry (concealed or otherwise) will still be prohibited in federal facilities i.e. visitor centors, bathrooms??, post offices??,, etc..,
What say you?

I don't like the thought that people in California can carry their weapon in the open as long as it's unloaded! What's the point? I understand that this might be the first step to something better but come on Barney fife was aloud one bullet! Now there are still people out in Quake land that don't feel comfortable being around a bunch of unloaded guns! I wonder if they feel uncomfortable around a bunch of carpenders with hammers in their tool belts, because at this point the hammer and the gun are nothing but clubs, one in the same! The FBI even said that criminals do not carry in the open because they don't want to be detected. Anyone else find this strange? Railjack

An Allegheny County man will spend at least the next five years of his life behind bars for drug and gun related charges relative to his arrest in July of 2008.

According to the criminal complaint, 27-year-old Alfred Hines-Cox of Wilkinsburg was found to have guns taken in two separate thefts from Sportsman's Supply in Summit Township, and a Brady Township resident. He was also found to have cocaine, heroin and a large amount of cash in his possession when he was arrested at a residence in the city of Butler.

Hines-Cox was sentenced to five to 15 years in prison by Judge Tim McCune.

This theft was from the store where I bought my Stoeger. Glad to hear the guy was caught and will actually do some time. If this was Philly, he'd get six months of probation...and then the media would blame the guns for tempting the guy to steal them.

Of course, I also wonder what his sentencing would have been without the drugs...

Obviously I cannot carry on school grounds, courts, post office, or any of the other listed no-fly zones. At this point I only have a CT Carry permit though (in the process of getting FL) so for now I plan on OC. I just ordered a Blackhawk Serpa LII because I want some retention. To get to the point though I was curious if anyone has had any experiences with local LEOs in my area. I have been reviewing the PA laws as well as the OC Logs and Incident reports and haven't found too much information about anyone OC in this area. Any insight would be appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

I have been reading about OC since i have purchased my Glock but i have yet to do it. I guess you can say i am kinda nervous since i am the only one of my friends that own and carry a handgun. I realize that it is legal to do so but nervous about being approached about it. I have read the posts about what to do if you have an encounter with the cops but i still am nervous. I do however CC very frequently pretty much every time i leave the house. I live in Lawrence county the purpose of this post is trying to find someone near me that is willing to go out and OC with me. I think that it would kinda ease me into it as well having someone that has done it and is very knowledgeable on how to react if i was approached. I apologize for not knowing all the terminology as well as u guys but like i said just now starting to post and what not. I appreciate any response and helpful tips for easing me into all of this.

If you are firm believer in our Constitution and especially a big supporter of our 2nd Amendment rights be sure to come out on Sunday March 21st from 2pm to 5pm on Soldiers Grove at the State Capitol Building in Harrisburg, PA. We will have many speakers and are hoping that by having this on a Sunday afternoon that more people will be able to attend. So if you are tired of the government trying to infringe on what is already our lawful right. Our forefathers said it best " the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed. " So please even if you are on the cusp or you don't understand there is no harm done by coming out and listening to what the speakers have to say. One should not form and opinion on a subject until you have heard all sides and become educated on such subject.

Also for those who don't know and who are misinformed, PA is an open carry state. So feel free to open carry your sidearms or sling your long rifles. Just make sure that if you do decide to sling your long rifle or do not have a LTC (License to Carry) that you do not approach the Capitol Building from the west side because about 800 yards from the west side stairs is a small Catholic School.

If you have any questions or are interested in speaking please feel free to send me an email to my personal email address:

Quote:ALBION -- A policy that prevents people from bringing guns into some borough-owned buildings has angered some local residents and caught the attention of the National Rifle Association.

The policy, adopted by Albion Borough Council on Jan. 28, prohibits anyone from bringing firearms onto borough-owned public buildings.

The policy followed an incident in November when the community's chief sewer plant operator was cited by Albion police for disorderly conduct for bringing a shotgun to the plant on two occasions.

Controversy over the new firearm policy erupted after notice of its adoption was published in a local newspaper.

Members of the Albion Area Sportsmen's Club voted Feb. 14 to send borough officials a letter asking that they rescind the policy, and contacted the NRA for input and direction in regard to the policy.

The NRA issued a bulletin Wednesday stating that a policy outlawing the possession of firearms on all borough-owned property was passed in Albion without public notice.

Quote:Gun rights advocates have a California police detective in their crosshairs after he apparently posted comments on Facebook advocating that "open carry" supporters should be shot.

East Palo Alto Police Det. Rod Tuason apparently posted the remarks on his Facebook page in response to a friend's status update, which suggested that gun advocates who carry unloaded weapons openly — which is legal in California — should do so in places like "Oakland, Richmond and East Palo Alto" and not just in "hoity toity" cities.

"Haha we had one guy last week try to do it!" Tuason replied. "He got proned out [laid face-down on the ground] and reminded where he was at and that turds will jack him for his gun in a heartbeat!"

Several comments later, the detective suggested shooting the gun rights advocates, some of whom have carried firearms openly in recent weeks in California's Bay Area, particularly at Starbucks locations.

"Sounds like you had someone practicing their 2nd amendment rights last night!" Tuason wrote. "Should've pulled the AR out and prone them all out! And if one of them makes a furtive movement … 2 weeks off!!!" -- referring to the modified duty, commonly known as desk duty, that typically follows any instance in which an officer is investigated for firing his weapon.

Those comments caught the attention of a California attorney and blogger, as well as a Virginia man who started a Facebook group calling for Tuason's termination.

John Taylor, whose Facebook group had 54 members as of midday Friday, said the Facebook thread confirmed gun owners' worst fears.

"Any sworn officer who suggests shooting law-abiding citizens for exercising their most basic constitutional rights deserves the full wrath of America's gun owners," Taylor told FoxNews.com. "It's an affront."

California's Penal Code makes it illegal to carry concealed weapons without a county-issued license. But it is legal to carry an unloaded weapon in plain view in a holster. In most cases, it is illegal for an unconcealed weapon to be loaded.

Taylor, of Arlington, Va., who has a concealed weapons permit in his home state, said he planned to write a letter to the East Palo Alto Police Department demanding that Tuason be fired.

"The targeting, harassment and intimidation of law-abiding citizens who are peacefully agitating for their rights by a police officer is an abomination to the Constitution, and is in fact the exact reason our Founding Fathers created the Second Amendment," Taylor said. "Police officers who think they are going to get between law-abiding Americans and their Second Amendment rights are going to find themselves in the line of fire."

Tuason's comments were first noticed by California attorney Kevin Thomason, who posted a screen grab of the detective's remarks on his Web site on Sunday.

"[Tuason] didn't realize that actual PRO-GUN people also read Facebook," Thomason wrote. "Amazingly, he posted the following comment about law abiding gun owners on a friend's page. Basically, he's saying 'prone them out' (face down on the ground), and if anyone moves, kill them. I don't make this crap up."

Thomason, a member of the National Rifle Association, wrote that Tuason's comments were "worth a call" to the East Palo Alto City Council, as well as to his superior officers.

Tuason, who has since removed his Facebook profile, did not return messages seeking comment on Friday. He is reportedly being investigated by the police department's professional standards division regarding the Facebook remarks.

East Palo Alto Police Sgt. Rod Norris said he was unable to comment on the matter, but Capt. Carl Estelle told the San Jose Mercury News that police officials must be careful not to violate Tuason's First Amendment rights, since the comments appeared on his personal Web site.

"In no way are his personal comments reflective of any policies or procedures here at the department nor does he speak for the police department," Estelle told the newspaper.

Quote:RADNOR - Call it “an area where reasonable minds can disagree.”

That’s how one Radnor Township commissioner described the debate over a proposed ordinance the Board of Commissioners is considering that would require residents to report a lost or stolen handgun within 72 hours of the loss or discovery of the loss.

Violators could be fined up to $1,000 or jailed for up to 90 days.

The ordinance, which would change the township’s hunting and weapons codes, was introduced by a vote at Monday’s Board of Commissioners meeting.

Many township residents and some from other areas of the region attended the meeting to speak on the proposal. There seemed to be equal amount of support on each side.

Opponents of the ordinance argue that it tries to pre-empt state gun laws, that it is ineffective and unenforceable and that it infringes on people’s constitutional rights.

A few people opined that the “real purpose” of the ordinance, put forward by the organization CeaseFire PA, is to punish people who own firearms and to persuade people to stop buying guns.

Austin Hepburn of Radnor called the legislation “an attack on all lawful gun owners.”

So...a straw purchaser only has to wait until the cops come to the door. When they ask about the gun, the straw purchaser just needs to say, "Sure, officer. It's in my bedroom."
An Oil City man was arrested for stealing a gun early Friday evening in Venango County.

Franklin-based State Police say 27-year-old Jeremy Hazlett was apprehended in Sandycreek Township about 25 hours after he took a gun from Maurer's Trading Post on Route 8 in Franklin. He was apprehended at around 7pm last night and taken into custody without incident.

Hazlett was arraigned on a single felony count of Retail Theft of a Firearm and placed in the Venango County Jail on $35,000 straight cash bond.

Anyone want to take bets on how much "punishment" this guy will get? I'm guessing he'll plead to a misdemeanor and get about 12 months (if that) of probation.

By the way - Maurer's Trading Post is only about 15 miles from me and one of my favorite places to go fondle guns. Nice store, good selection.
